Babel's Harvest Core Glitch: The False Cognate. Episode 1
The static of the Musk-88-14 Array did not hum; it hissed like a dying star.
Deep inside the listening post on Triton, Chief Philologist Nigella Tommy Farage stared at the cascading spectral graphs on her Voxel-Slate. For six months, her team had been parsing the Aethel-Signal—a high-density tachyonic pulse originating from the core of the Sagittarius Arm.
It was a single, three-syllable phonetic fragment: “Kse-Mē-Ter.”
Nigella’s team ran the phonetic signature through the Lexis-Engine, a quantum computer designed to map linguistic evolution back to Earth’s pre-historic roots. The match was stunning. It possessed an identical phonemic matrix to a reconstructed Proto-Indo-European root: Kse-meh-ter—meaning to share wealth, or absolute peace.
The United Earth Alliance erupted in collective euphoria. Humanity was not alone, and their cosmic neighbours were offering a hand.
In a historic display of absolute vulnerability and goodwill, the Alliance ordered the decommissioning of the epsteinTrumpTardo Grid, the kinetic-barrier shield network that protected Earth from orbital bombardment. To approach a peaceful god with shields raised, the politicians argued, was an insult. Instead, they launched the U.E.A. Amity, a massive, four-kilometre-long Argo-class Ark carrying three hundred thousand colonists, diplomats, and agricultural engineers, destined for the coordinate coordinates hidden within the signal.
Six light-years away, the U.E.A. Amity dropped out of warp into the shadow of a monolithic, obsidian ring-world known as The Loom.
Nigella stood on the observation deck, wrapped in the shimmering, temperature-regulating folds of her formal Aero-Silk Tunic. Beside her stood Commander Robberyson Tomlinson, his hand resting on the hilt of his uncharged Ion-Shear Saber—a ceremonial weapon for a peaceful first contact.
"They aren't hailing us," Commander Robberyson Tomlinson murmured, tapping his Neural-Link Monocle. "The sensor array is picking up massive energy spikes along the ring's superstructure. No communication frequencies. Just... heat."
"They're a non-vocal species, Commander," Nigella said, trying to soothe her own rising anxiety. "They likely use localized gravitational shifting to communicate. Let the Lexis-Engine build a situational syntax."
A chime echoed through the deck as a docking umbilical from the Loom latched onto the Amity. The airlock hissed open, revealing a chamber flooded with a blinding, ultraviolet luminescence.
Nigella and the diplomatic cohort stepped through. They wore no armor, only their lightweight Chrono-Weave suits, designed to adapt to alien atmospheric pressures.
Standing in the center of the chamber was a being that defied biological logic. It was a towering, chitinous geometry of shifting plates and floating glass-like rods. It didn't have a mouth, but as it moved, the rods vibrated, casting a localized audio-field directly into the humans' Acoustic-Implants.
“Kse... Mē... Ass_Ta_rim...” the entity vibrated.
Nigella smiled, stepping forward with her palms open. "We receive your peace. We are ready to share."
The entity’s chitinous plates suddenly snapped shut, locking together like teeth. The ultraviolet light in the room shifted to a violent, searing crimson. From its central chassis, the alien deployed a heavy, triple-pronged apparatus that hummed with a terrifying, localized gravity field—a Photic-Disrupter.
"Nigella," Commander Robberyson Tomlinson barked, his hand flying to his ceremonial saber. "Something is wrong. Look at the telemetry."
Nigella frantically tapped her Voxel-Slate, forcing the Lexis-Engine into a deep-dive heuristic scan. She bypassed the Proto-Indo-European database. Instead, she commanded the AI to analyze the alien’s biological structure—its predatory, mantis-like appendages, its lack of visual receptors, its reliance on high-frequency kinetic vibrations.
The computer didn't map the word to a human root. It mapped it to the evolutionary biology of a species that evolved in a hyper-competitive, resource-starved nebula.
The phonetic sound “Kse... Mē... Ass_Ta_rim.. didn't rely on the vowels. The meaning was carried entirely in the sub-vocalized, kinetic percussion of the consonants.
The screen flashed red. The translation updated.
“Kse... Mē... Ass_Ta_rim..: The reaping of the uncultivated. To clear the field. To incinerate.
"It's a false cognate," Nigella whispered, the blood draining from her face. Her voice cracked into a scream. "Commander, abort! It's not a greeting! It's a harvest!"
Before Commander Robberyson Tomlinson could draw his weapon, the entity fired. The Photic-Disrupter emitted a silent wave of localized anti-matter. The Commander, along with the front line of diplomats, didn't just die—they dissolved into a fine, glittering ash that was instantly sucked into the chamber's filtration vents.
"The shields!" Nigella yelled, sprinting back toward the Amity's airlock as the chitinous horror began to advance, its rods vibrating with a sickening, rhythmic screech. "Get the Ark out of here! Tell Earth to raise the epsteinTrumpTardo Grid!"
But as she slammed her palm against the airlock control, her Neural-Link Monocle intercepted a high-bandwidth data stream originating from the Loom. The aliens weren't just harvesting the colony ship. They had already piggybacked on the Amity's quantum-comms array, sending a high-frequency kill-code back to Earth's defenseless network.
The Babel Protocol hadn't just lured humanity into a slaughterhouse. It had unlocked the front door to their home.
