Part 2 - The Basalt Requiem: Jeronimobal’s Shadow and the Shockwaves of the Broken Core. HF894

The command bridge of the Titan-Class Dreadnought Obsidian was a graveyard of twisted titanium and dying sparks. The artificial gravity grid had completely failed, leaving the corpses of Roman officers drifting in the smoky air like slow-moving ghosts. Emergency crimson luminescent strips pulsed weakly, casting long, bleeding shadows across the ruined chamber.

Commander Legatus Varro lay pinned beneath a collapsed tactical hololith console. His ornate cybernetic armor was cracked, leaking blue hydraulic fluid that mingled with his own blood. Every breath felt like inhaling crushed glass.

A sharp, metallic hiss cut through the groaning metal of the hull.

The emergency hatch sheared open. Through the smoke strode Jeronimobal. He did not look like a conqueror from the Core World holovids; he wore a battered, vacuum-scorched pressure suit patched with lead-woven thermal tape. His face, visible through a scarred visor, was weathered by the radiation of a hundred outer-rim suns.

Jeronimobal stepped over the drifting debris, his mag-boots clanking heavily against the warped floorboards. He stopped above Varro, looking down at the broken Legatus with cold, unblinking eyes.

"You ran the simulations a thousand times, didn't you, Varro?" Jeronimobal’s voice was raspy, carried through the external speaker of his suit. "You thought our scrap-metal hulls couldn't hold the line."

Varro spat blood, glaring up at him with fierce, dying Roman pride. "You... you are a ghost, Jeronimobal. A barbarian drifting in the dark. You won a single canyon, but you cannot stop the Core. The Senate will send a hundred more dreadnoughts. Our civilization is infinite."

Jeronimobal knelt, his gloved hand resting on the shattered console pinning Varro. "Your civilization is heavy, Legatus. So heavy that you couldn't see how your own mass would trap you. The Senate builds walls of iron; we weave the void." He reached down and yanked the golden command signet ring from Varro’s cybernetic gauntlet. "Tell the ancestors that the outer rim has stopped running."

Varro’s eyes went glassy as the last of his life support flickered out, leaving his final protest trapped in his throat. Jeronimobal turned back toward the hatch, leaving the Obsidian to rot in the basalt shadows of Acheron.

The ripple effects of the Acheron Singularity tore through the galaxy faster than a tachyon pulse.

On the capital worlds of the Core, where cities spanned across whole continents under artificial atmospheric domes, the news struck like a physical blow. The hololith networks, usually filled with state propaganda and market algorithms, went completely silent. When the transmissions resumed, they showed the drifting, shattered remnants of the Obsidian tangled in the gravity-weave.

Panic erupted across the Core Worlds:

• The High Senate collapsed into immediate infighting, with factions accusing the military tribunal of catastrophic blindness. Emergency martial law was declared across three star systems to suppress growing riots.

• The Core Markets suffered a total economic freeze. The dark-matter shipping lanes, once thought completely secure under Roman dreadnought protection, were suddenly uninsurable. Share values for deep-space freight plummeted to zero overnight.

• The Outer Rim Sectors, long crushed under the boot of Roman taxation, saw the Acheron Singularity as a beacon. Whispers of rebellion turned into open sabotage. Across the fringe, mining colonies cut their telemetry feeds to the Core, casting their lot with the phantom general who had proven that even an empire could be pulled down by the gravity of its own arrogance.

The Roman dream wasn't just broken; it was being unraveled, thread by thread, by the very void they had sought to conquer.
